MIGUEL ANGEL OXLAJ CÚMEZ (Comalapa, Guatemala). Poet, translator, and cultural and literary manager. He holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the University of San Carlos in Guatemala and a degree in Linguistic Revitalization from the Mondragón University in the Basque Country. He is a professor at the Kaqchikel Maya University. He is a union leader, defender of indigenous peoples' rights, and digital activist for indigenous languages ​​on the internet. He coordinates the Wikipedia initiative in indigenous languages ​​in Guatemala. He is a member of the Ajtz'ib' Collective, writers from Comalapa.
In 2007, he won the B'atz National Prize for Indigenous Literature in Guatemala. In 2023, the organizers and curators of The Americas Poetry Festival of New York honored him as Poet of the Year. In 2024, he received the distinction of Full Member of the Tomitana Academy in Romania for his literary and cultural work. The Mihai Eminescu Foundation and the Mihai Eminescu International Academy of Romania named him a Cultural Ambassador for his literary work across cultures. In 2024, he was honored in Guatemala with the Artist of the Year award for his contributions to Indigenous literature.
He has published the poetry collections: Rutaqikil ri Sarima - The Mission of Sarima (Guatemala, 2009), Half a Woman (Guatemala, 2019), Xtisaqirisan na pe - Plain of Forgetfulness (Guatemala, 2020), Jun man oyob’en k’ulunïk - Unexpected Encounter (Guatemala, 2024), and Rajawal ri k’ichelaj - Guardian of the Forest (Puerto Rico, 2025). He has written stories for the books of the Guatemalan Ministry of Education that have been translated into the Mayan languages ​​Q'eqchi', Mam, K'iche', Tzutujil, Q'anjobal, Ixil and Achi.
