Young People’s Poetry Marathon in Spanish

In its fourth year in 2003, our Young People’s Poetry Marathon in Spanish is moving from April to December in order to better accommodate schools’ schedules.

Students from kindergarten through high school are invited to participate:  either by writing and presenting their own poem in Spanish, or by studying and performing a previously published poem. Some classes take part in unison recitals.  Schools from all over the national capital are welcome, but signing up early is critical.

We only have four hours available for this marathon – two for elementary students and two for middle and high schoolers.

The Young People’s Poetry Marathon in Spanish is free to participating students and schools.

Dear Teachers, Principals and Other Educators:

We cordially invite you and your students to participate in our upcoming 4th Young People’s Poetry Marathon in Spanish on Thursday, December 11.  It will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Public Library at 901 G St., N.W. in Washington, DC.  Please note that this December date, although previously announced in our season brochure, is a change from prior years.

This event is entirely FREE to all schools and students.  From 10 a.m. – 12:00 noon is dedicated to elementary school students; from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. middle and high school students participate.  Students are encouraged to create their own poems in Spanish and recite them at the marathon.  Alternately, students may prepare a dramatic recitation – either in groups or individually – of a previously published Spanish-language poem.  This is an excellent event for all Heritage language classes, foreign language students and social studies special projects.  Classes may also attend the marathon without participating.  All participating students receive a prize.

Teatro de la Luna instructors are eager to come to your classroom to help students learn the theatricality of public recitation.  We are available for one-time or month-long workshops.  We are also happy to offer individual teacher guidance on selection of material and cultural support resources.

Artistic Director Mario Marcel will host this annual Festival of Language, which is produced through our Experience Theater program.  One of the goals of the Experience Theater program is to promote the proper use of the Spanish language.

Please call 202-882-6227 or write us at info@teatrodelaluna.org for more information about this marathon, to register your class to participate, or for classroom instruction information.

We hope to see you on December 11th   at this Gran Fiesta de la Palabra (Festival of Language).
